Microsoft Vista Doesn't Download Anything

When using a Windows Vista computer you may run into a problem with the operating system downloading files.

Windows Vista is one of the most up-to-date Microsoft operating systems available (only Windows 7 is currently newer, as of 2011). However, if you are having trouble downloading content to your Vista computer system you need to troubleshoot the situation.

This it typically caused by either a faulty Internet connection or an Internet settings issue. Regardless of the problem you are able to correct the issue yourself, without taking the computer into a local repair facility.

Ethernet Connection

Check the Ethernet cable running from the Internet modem into your computer. Make sure this cable is completely connected to both the computer and the modem, as a loose connection prevents the computer from downloading data from the Internet. When connected correctly the modem and the Windows Vista computer system is going to have a green light ignite directly above the Ethernet cable.

Power down the modem of your Internet connection and leave it off for a few minutes. Doing so allows the modem to reset and correct any internal issues. After a few minutes turn the high-speed Internet modem back on. This is a quick fix that allows you to access the Internet and download anything from the web.

Restart Windows Vista Computer

Restart the computer. On occasion your computer may not boot properly, preventing the system from downloading content off of the Internet. Once the computer properly restarts you are able to gain access to the Internet downloads.

Open your anti-virus software and go to the "Options" menu. The anti-virus software may be preventing any downloads from occurring on the Vista system. Select the option that allows you to download self-initiated content (meaning you select to download the files) and click "Apply" (the exact phrasing may be slightly different, depending on the software you are using).

Click the "Start" button on your desktop then choose "Control Panel." Once in the Control Panel click on the "Internet Options" icon and go to the firewall settings. Make sure your Internet browser is listed as a program that is able to freely connect to the Internet and is not blocked from accessing online content. If it isn't, click "Browse" next to the "Accepted Programs" and choose your browser from the list of programs installed on the computer.

Download and install a different web browser. Your current web browser may have a defect, so using a different browser can correct the issue. There are several different browsers available to use on Windows Vista, including Firefox, Safari and Opera.
